About This Project

Essence Magazine

“My great-aunt Sis would let me milk her cow,” recalls chef Jennifer Hill Booker of summers and holidays on her family’s Charleston, Mississippi, farm. When she wasn’t helping her grandmother make jams from the fruit they’d picked or watching her grandfather slaughter hogs, she was dreaming of a life in Paris. “I’ve always been in love with France,” says Booker, who started taking French lessons in eighth grade.  “Paris seemed so romantic and it was always so beautiful.” At 17 she made her first voyage to the City of Light and left determined to return someday.
